I claim no mastery of grammar or spelling, so please excuse the errors. ^^; Daystar trotted proudly by his human female as they walked down the noisy and crowded corridor, stopping in front of his crate. He was always nervous whenever he went to these gatherings but today the other dogs, all the noise, and general excitement that was in the air did not faze him. The different smells that smelled nothing like home were also starting to become... familiar. Especially the hot dog stand across the way. His human knelt down and hugged him, petting his brindled head and talking excitedly. 'I must have pleased her a great deal today,' he thought to himself. Daystar listened patiently, basking in the feeling of happiness that washed over her as she talked. She put the ribbon she was carrying above his crate and took off his leash. This was the signal to go to bed. It was just as well though. Daystar was tired from the earlier runs so he obediently went in his crate, the nose of the door springs echoing in the crate as he turned around and watched his human walk off. He lay awake for a while, reflecting on the pride his human had shown towards him and only him today. He loved her more than the rest of the pack that was in the house. Sometimes the adult female would feed Daystar when his human was not there and the smaller one liked to pull on his ears and play fetch with him. It was still far too noisy to sleep yet, so Daystar chewed on the bone that was left in the corner for him, content at the feeling on his gums and teeth. Something felt wrong though. He whipped his head around, listening for it, but it was when he was trying to concentrate on the tiny noise that the other dogs started howling. His hackles raised in irritation. "Shut up!" he cried, but the other dogs paid no attention to him. He couldn't smell it, but he knew it was there. He tried to move his flank closer to the front of the cage to avoid it, but he didn't want to knock his water bowl over and have to sleep on a wet bed. The rat. There was a rat in his crate and he knew it. How it followed him from the basement he had no idea. He darted his head around, peering in to the dark corners of the back wall, hoping to see it in between the folds of the pink blanket that lined the bottom of his crate. Still seeing nothing, he felt something brush up against his rump. He howled with a mix of anger and fear and rammed his head as hard as he could against the door in a desperate attempt to get away. The door sprung open as the crate crashed to its side, Daystar bolting out of it as soon as he got to his feet, too frightened to even look back. By now the rat was as big as his cage, its beady eyes showing from the darkness. Of course, he didn't see it, but he knew. Frantically looking around the compound, he saw none of the humans and the stands that were there that afternoon. Not even a single dog was out. Daystar cried out again, calling for his human to come back but she was nowhere to be seen. He felt helpless and so alone. Hopefully the rat had just stayed in his crate. He heard its terrible scream this time behind him. He turned around to see the rat had now tripled the size of the crate, towering over him and grinning its ugly, fanged teeth. Still facing it, he backed away as quickly as he could, but the rat just fell forward and opened its mouth to engulf Daystar in darkness within the maw of the rat.
Daystar was jolted awake, seconds from certain death. He panted in the cool air of the early morning, still feeling the hot breath of the dream rat engulfing him. It was summer and being outside, he was not used to sleeping in such heat. Looking around, he found himself still in the backyard of the house that was once his. Where his family had left him three days prior. Still shaken from the dream, he took comfort in the fact that it turned into a nightmare. He hated dreaming of the happy days with his human and waking up alone. Daylight had yet to peek over the horizon, but he could tell it was early enough to be awake. As he got to his feet and shook his heavy fur, Daystar regretted it a few moments later as a wave of dizziness came over him. Hunger so intense that it threatened to eat him from within. He couldn't stay here any longer. His human pack was not going to come back and feed him. He would have to go out on his own to find something to eat. Without a second thought to the loyalty that had held him here thus far, he started digging on the far side of the garden to widen the hole that was already there. Once on the other side of the fence, he sat down to catch his breath and survey the neighborhood that stood before him. He grinned to himself as he was staring at an endless line of trashcans near the street all for the taking. (Only one I have done so far, I hope to do the others next week)
